Pittsburgh, the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates, Penguins, Iron city beer and Heinz Ketchup, is what I called home. I grew up 10 km from downtown Pittsburgh in the suburbs.
The city is bordered by two rivers, the Allegheny and the Monongahela. The two rivers form the Golden Triangle or the Point, of Pittsburgh’s downtown, and flow together to create the Ohio River. The Ohio River is the ninth longest river in the U.S. It starts at Pittsburgh and drains into the Mississippi River at Cairo, Illinois.
Thanks to its geographical location, Pittsburgh is the nation’s third largest inland port, providing access to the extensive 9,000 mile (14,484 km) U.S. inland waterway system. Interestingly, Allegheny County, where Pittsburgh is located, has 1,700 bridges, 720 of them within the city’s limits. Fifteen major bridges cross into downtown Pittsburgh alone.
