In July 1977, 193 people were arrested for protesting the building of a gymnasium complex on the site of the famous May 1970 National Guard random shooting of people at Kent State University. The shooting, which is sometimes refered to as the Kent State Massacre, resulted in the killing of 4 people andthe wounding of 9 others (one paralyzed for life). The people arrested were occupying a part of KSU’s Commons, which is where the May 1970 shooting occured. The decision by some to occupy a part of the campus came after a 12 May 1977 Kent State University board meeting had decided to go ahead with the construction of the gymnasium. Thus, ‘Tent City' was erected. The protest lasted 61 days before the police forcefully removed the protesters from the campus grounds.
